an autumnal poem

It is impossible to resist a sunny and crisp autumn day, when you feel the cool winds on your shoulder but are warmed by the soft touch of the sun. Standing outside today, I saw beautiful yellow leaves descending wistfully towards the ground after being shaken by the harsh blowing winds of fall. They held on for dear life, but were eventually forced to let go of their guardian branches.

The science behind falling leaves is that the fluids that flow through leaves are thin and can easily become frozen. The leaves are therefore doomed by the cold temperatures of Winter, and trees would be better off saving energy by getting rid of them. The leaves lose their green color because the chlorophyll breaks down, and they are then shed by the tree.

Something very poetic struck me about this. Some kind of elegance and art in the natural beauty of the world and our seasons. Here, I hope to convey that artistic wonder in the form of a poem.

 "CRADLED DESCENT"
 by Another Little Birdie

These creatures stare at me
in awe
Do they not realize the pain
I am burdened with?

My mother has decided
we are no longer a priority
cutting us from
the family.

They take pictures
calling my discolored self
"a natural golden beauty"
and "a red queen"

I long to be green.
dull green.

The hue that brought
me comfort,
not a shivering fear of
my life ahead.

Not a shivering fear
that makes me weak,
that drains courage
from my soul
that plucks me
from my home

and sweetly
cradles me down
down, down, down
to join my fallen family

as those creatures
rake us all into
a pile, and
smile the smile
that we used to know.

This poem is meant to delve into the thoughts of something with a life but not a brain. I wanted to put myself in the position of an inanimate object. We all look at autumn leaves as beautiful and divine, but is that what they would think about their lives if they could? How would they see humans? This poem gives one angle of the many answers to these questions.

I challenge you to create another autumnal poem and leave it in the comments down below!
